BusinessesCommunity Information Local HistorySite of the Indian trading post of Gabriel Godfroy from 1809 - 1820. John Steward settled here in 1824 and with Judge Augustus Brevoort Woodward, of Detroit, platted the village, which they and Mr. Harwood recorded on April 21, 1825; at a meeting held to decide upon a permanent name, Judge Woodward suggested that of the Greek war of independence hero, General Demetrius Ypsilanti. Issac Powers became the first postmaster of February 13, 1826. It was in Wayne County until Washtenaw was organized in 1829. Incorporated as a village in 1832 and as a city in 1858.
