Local HistoryJonathan F. Stratton, a surveyor, and Luke H. Whitmore, who lived near Ann Arbor, were land looking when they camped here soon after 1825. Mr. Stratton suggested the name of the lake and it was placed on the maps with that name. Mr. Whitmore became a local landowner and the first county treasurer in 1829. It was first called Northfield after the township, but was changed to Whitmore Lake on December 27, 1854. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
