Local HistoryThe Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western Railroad extended its line from here to the iron ore range fifty miles west in 1884. Sereno M. Streeter became the first postmaster of the first post office in the county here on January 14, 1884. The Indians referred to the site as a place where the waters meet, the waters being the middle branch of the Ontonagon River and Duck Creek. It was in Ontonagon County until Gogebic was organized in 1887. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
