Local HistoryA country store with a post office of which Jesse P. Delong became the first postmaster on August 31, 1880. Among the names sent in were Viola and Olney, but there were already Michigan post offices with those names, so the department put the V from Viola in front of Olney and made the name Volney, which was accepted. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
