Local HistoryIt was first settled in 1817 by Nathaniel Squires and his wife, Jemima. The first settlement was first known as Macdougalville, until Joseph Stead in 1829 platted and recorded it as Harlow, after an English town. In 1833, at the suggestion of Gurdon C. Leech it was renamed after Utica, NY where many of its early settlers having come from that area. William Smith became its first postmaster on June 17, 1836.
