Local HistoryThe area was first surveyed by Robert Clark in 1826. Isaiah W. Bennett bought the first government land here in 1831. Justus Goodwin bought 600 acres from Mr. Bennett in 1833, built a mill race, etc., and was named the first postmaster of Goodwinville on November 9, 1834. He sold 322 acres to E. W. Morgan who platted and recorded the town site as Union City in 1835. The post office was so renamed on January 23, 1840. Incorporated as a village in 1866. Both Union City and its Township of Union may have been so named because the Coldwater and St. Joseph Rivers unite here. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
