Local HistoryJoseph F. Clapp selected a sawmill site on the Pine River and built his cabin here in 1853. Mr. Capp, with Dr. Abram M. Crawford, had L. D. Preston plat the village in 1855 and named it Pine River. The adjacent village of St. Louis was platted and recorded in 1859. The two villages were consolidated as St. Louis in 1865.
