Local HistoryWhen erected on March 17, 1835, the township was named Jefferson, after the late President. In 1838, it was renamed Sterling, honoring pioneer Azariah W. Sterling. On June 1, 1966, the entire township was incorporated as the home rule city of Sterling Heights, effective July 1, 1968. A branch of the Utica post office in 1971.
