Local HistoryThe area began being settled about 1779 by the French spreading out from Detroit (pioneer families included Couchez, Frazho, Maison, Trombley, Fresard, Vernier). It was first named L'Anse Cruise (deep bay) from its location. It was renamed when incorporated as a village in 1925.
