BusinessesLocal HistoryLewis J. Clark, opened a store nearby in 1867 and moved into the village-to-be in 1868. It was by the Manistee River and was first called Manistee Bridge. On February 3, 1868, it was given a post office as Sherman, after General William T. Sherman. The village was platted by Sanford Gasser in 1869 and was the first county seat from 1869 - 1881.
