BusinessesLocal HistoryThe village was founded by lumberman Isaac N. Shepherd and others. It was given a post office as Salt River, from its location by the Salt River in August, 1857. The railroad came through in 1885 and built its depot on Mr. Shepherd's land, so for a time the station was named Shepherd and the post office Salt River. On March 8, 1887, the post office was moved and renamed Shepherd. Fire destroyed most of the Salt River that year, but present day Shepherd envelops the old Salt River site. Incorporated as a village in 1889. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
