BusinessesLocal HistoryThe village began as a station on the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad in 1870, and was named for the first station agent, Mr. Shelby. But there was another Shelby post office in Michigan, so when this village was given a post office on May 2, 1872, with Leonard M. Doxy as its first postmaster, the "ville" was added.
