BusinessesLocal HistoryFirst called Churchill's Corners for Walter H. Churchill, but renamed to Shelby. To connect the town with the railroad, which came through in 1872, S. A. Browne, Orrin Deming, and Alexander Pittenger platted it. They named it Barnett after a brakeman who, in return agreed to pay recording fees, but reneged. In 1873, Martin L. Sweet and Andreas Bevier made an adjacent plat and recorded it as Shelby. Both plats were incorporated as the village of Shelby in 1885. General Isaac Shelby, with his Kentucky Rangers, helped recapture Detroit from the British in the War of 1812. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
