BusinessesLocal HistoryThis station on the Grand Trunk Railroad was founded on land bought in 1846 by John P. Shaft for whom it was named. He platted the village and built its first hotel. Newton Bacon, dry goods merchant, became the first postmaster of Shaftsburgh on January 19, 1880, with the spelling changed to Shaftsburg on May 25, 1891.
