BusinessesLocal HistoryThe Pere Marquette Railroad came through here in 1874 and the town which formed was called Mason Center, from its location in the county. James Sweetland built a sawmill here in 1878 and he sold it to Hiram E. Scott and Mr. Crowley in 1879, and they added a store and homes and called it Sweetland. It was given a post office of that name on June 20, 1879, with Chauncey W. Rickerd as its first postmaster. Mr. Scott and Charles Blaine platted the village in 1882 and named it Scottville. Incorporated as a village in 1889 and as a city in 1907. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
