Local History

In 1864, Charles S. Sanford, from Madison County, N.Y., acquired 213 acres here in Jerome Township.  He platted the village in 1870.  Jay F. Hamilton became the first postmaster of Sanfordville on June 23, 1871, with its name shortened to Sanford on July 13, 1871.  The Pere Marquette Railroad came through the same year and built a station here.
