BusinessesLocal HistoryThe first trains of the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad to come through here in 1869 brought milling machinery to harvest the white pine in the area. Among the first to do so was Robert L. Salisbury who was named the postmaster on January 31, 1870 and who, with Fred C. Whitmore, purchased land, platted, recorded and named the village in 1871. It was named from its location by a shoal lake. Incorporated as a village in 1878. A small part of the village lies in Montcalm County.
