BusinessesLocal HistoryThe village is on Beaver Island, which James Jesse Strang took over for his Mormon (Church of the Latter Day Saints) colony in 1847. It was given a post office named Beaver Island, Michilimackinac county, on January 13, 1849, with Charles R. Wright as its first postmaster. Mr. Strang named the village St. James, after himself, and its post office was renamed St. James, Emmet County, on October 10, 1854. He was the only king to be crowned in the U.S. on July 8, 1850. After his murder, by disgruntled followers in 1856, the colony began to disintegrate. The Mormons left the island in1895, and the village is now a resort town. In the 1870s, it was also called Beaver Harbor. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
