Local History

The village was named from the initials of the Richardson & Avery Company which began building a sawmill here in 1913.  By the next summer it was in full swing and a town had developed from it.  The founders were Lloyd M. Richardson, of Saginaw, and Sewell L. Avery of Evanston, Illinois.  The latter was then president of U.S. Gypsum and later became president of Montgomery Ward.  Raco was given a post office on January 20, 1915.  A station on the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad.
