BusinessesLocal HistoryThe first settler in the township, Horace Wilson, Sr., bought 320 acres of government land and built his log cabin in 1830. John Cornish built the first house in the present village in 1833. When this township was separated from Coldwater in 1836, the suggestion of Dr. Hiram Allen, a recent settler from Quincy, Mass., for the new name was accepted. Enos G. Berry's log cabin became the first post office on December 16, 1836. A station on the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad. Incorporated as a village in 1858.
