BusinessesLocal HistoryFirst settled by Linus Potter with his wife and seven children in 1844. Within two years he died, but his family cleared the land and carried on. In 1868, his eldest son, George N. Potter built a sawmill and a boarding house for the hands on the latter becoming a hotel. James W. Potter became the first postmaster (at $12 a year) on March 15, 1870. It was platted and recorded in 1868 by R. D. Phelps and Charles H. Brown.
