BusinessesLocal HistoryAbout 1840, some Detroiters came here to make tan-bark and built a bark shanty; passing sailors gave the place the name of Bark Shanty Point. William Austin and others took up claims on the site about 1844. Anthony Oldfield and the Thompsons, William, Hugh, and Quintin built their sawmill in 1848. William Van Camp became the first postmaster of Bark Shanty on December 30, 1854, with the office renamed Port Sanilac, after the county, on August 4, 1857. Incorporated as a village in 1877.
