Local History

The first white settler in the area was Mr. Herring who built his cabin in 1830.  The settlement was given a post office as Sweetland on May 28, 1836.  Moses Austin helped organize and name Portage Township in 1838.  The office was renamed Portage on June 26, 1839.  It was named from its chief stream, Portage Creek.
