BusinessesLocal HistorySylvester Sibley bought his land here on June 15, 1831, thus becoming the first private owner of lands in the county. The first actual settler was Dr. Cyrenius Thompson. It was called the Junction when Henry Wellever built his tavern here in 1853. The village was platted and recorded as Plainwell by Ira Chichester for the proprietors on April 8, 1863. Incorporated as a village in 1869 and as a city in 1934. It was named after the original name of its township, which was renamed Gun Plain in 1845.
