Local History

The village was founded by John Nitz and C. A. Applegate in 1888.  Albert Kleinschmidt became its first postmaster on April 20, 1890.  Incorporated as a village in 1902.  Named from its proximity to the Pigeon River which was so named because of the large number of wild pigeons in the area.
