BusinessesLocal HistoryThe Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad built a station here in 1857. It was surveyed by a local landowner, A. F. Bell, in 1857, but not recorded until 1859 (officially the village takes 1859 as its founding year). It was named at the suggestion of another pioneer resident, J. C. Blanchard, for an Indian chief with whom he had hunted along the Grand River. Hiram W. Blanchard, the first postmaster, served from July 14, 1857 to 1870. Incorporated as a village in 1871.
