BusinessesLocal HistoryIt was originally the site of the farm of Richard Peters who came to this region in 1824. He became the first postmaster in April, 1831, with the office named Summerfield, but changed to Petersburgh on January 24, 1863, and to Petersburg, on December 18, 1893. Thomas G. Cole and Austin E. Wing, of Monroe, founded the village on land acquired from Mr. Peters in 1836. Incorporated as a village in 1869 and as a city in 1967.
