BusinessesLocal HistoryIt was originally, the Indian village of Pequaquawaming (Point Village or Cape Point). It was named from its location at a point on Keweenaw Bay. The Indians has left by the time Peter Crebassa, a trader, came in 1836. The Hebard & Thurber Lumber Company (Charles and Edward W. Hebard and H. C. Thurber) began building mills, homes and stores here in 1878, and Charles Hebard platted the village in 1879. Edward W. Hebard became its first postmaster on May 17, 1880.
