BusinessesRestaurants Local HistoryThe first settler on the site was Sanford Marsh in 1839 and it was given a post office named Sanford on April 8, 1840. In 1840-41, Freeman Bray platted the village as Hamilton, after Alexander Hamilton. So for a time, the village was Hamilton and the post office was Sanford. Residents began to call the town Okemos after the Indian chief whose tribe had often camped in the vicinity. On May 26, 1862, both the village and the post office became officially known as Okemos.
