Local History
Erastus Ingersoll and family, from Ontario County, New York, became the first settlers in the area in 1825. Dr. J. C. Emery, at his wife's suggestion, proposed the name Novi when the township was organized in 1832.
The first settler in Novi Corners was John Elmore, who came before 1830. With the office named Novi, Gideon W. Smith became its first postmaster on January 5, 1833.
Some say the name was derived from No. VI, it being the sixth terminus on the plank road from Detroit, while others hold it was derived from the Latin word for new, implying that here was to be had a fresh start in life. Incorporated as a village in 1958.. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
