Local History

Deacon Joseph Dame founded and platted the village in 1852, naming it from its location.  Later that year, it annexed nearby Waukazooville, which had been named for Cheif Waukazoo.  William Voice, built the first sawmill in 1856.  It was the first county seat, 1863-83.  Incorporated as a village in 1903.
