Local History

It was first settled by the Jackson Iron Company (see Jackson, Michigan) in 1846.  The Pioneer Furnace opened here in 1857.  The settlement was given a post office as Neganne on January 21, 1858, with Edward C. Hungerford as its first postmaster; the spelling was changed to Negaunee on February 11, 1858.

In 1865, J.P. Pendill and the Pioneer Company had two plats made, that of the former called Iron and of the latter Negaunee; on these two plats, together with some of the Jackson land, the present city stands.  Incorporated as a village in 1865 and as a city in 1873.  Negaunee is Chippewa for "pioneer".
