Exploring our Heritage through our Ancestors
State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryIn 1834, Calvin G. Hill, a native of New York, bought from the government 400 acres lying on both sides of the Thornapple River, within the present limits of the village. It was known as Thornapple until the Middleville post office was moved here on May 18, 1843, and the village took the name of the post office. Incorporated as a village in 1867. Thornapple Township was named from the river which in turn had been so named because of the abundance of thornapple trees upon its banks. Middleville was so named because of its proximity to Middle Village. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
