Local HistoryJohn Davis, the first settler in the county, located here in 1851. The county was organized in 1859 and named for a Pottawattomi chief, whose name means Big Bear, and who signed the Treaty of Washington in 1836. The township of Mecosta was organized in 1861, with R. A. Moon as its first supervisor. It was given a rural post office on January 5, 1867, with Henry E. Clark as its first postmaster. The present village of Mecosta owes its existence to the Detroit, Lansing & Northern Railroad, which came through in 1879. Incorporated as a village in 1883.
