Exploring our Heritage through our Ancestors State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryThe area at the mouth of the Belle River was first called Yankee Point, having been first settled by eastern Yankees. With his wife and son, lake captain Samuel Ward came here in 1820 and built his log house on what is now the main street. The town was set off in 1822 and named Cottrellville, for county commissioner George Cottrell. It was given a post office as Belle River on December 27, 1831. In 1835-37, General Duthan Northrup, as agent for Ohio speculators, bought much of Belle River land and platted the village, naming it Newport. But its post office remained Belle River as there was then another Newport. The legislature renamed it Marine in 1865 and on May 20, 1865, its post office was renamed Marine City. The legislature renamed it Marine City in 1867. Incorporated as a city in 1887. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
