State Parks and Camping in MichiganLocal HistoryThe first three settlers in the area (then known as Cedar Creek) were George Manton, Ezra Harger and William Meares in 1872. Mr. Manton became the first postmaster on January 3, 1873. The first plat was recorded in 1874. A station on the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad. Incorporated as a village in 1877 and as a city in 1923. George Manton was the largest property owner and the town was named for him.
