Local History

The village was founded in 1871 by Henry Schoolcraft who named it after the Ojibawa name for the Monistique (meaning vermillion) River, but when registered with the state, an error in spelling was made, and let stand.  A station on the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroad.  Incorporated as a village in1885 and as a city in 1901.
