Local History

John Wetmore and Judah Church (nearby Judah Lake was named for him) made the first land entries in the area in 1819, a power dame, built in 1823, united several small lakes and formed the present mile-wide lake.

The settlement was first called Canandaigua for and by the settlers who had come here from the Canandaigua, N.Y., area.  The village was first platted as Canandaigua City by James Stillson in 1836.  But when it was given a post office the townspeople chose Orion "because it was short, handy to write, and altogether lovely".  James Decker became it s first postmaster on June 30, 1834.

The office was renamed to Oakland on May 11, 1843, but was later closed.  On June 28, 1854, the New Canandaigua post office was transferred her and renamed Orion.  Incorporated as the village of Orion in 1859.  Its post office was renamed to Lake Orion on March 25, 1926 and by the popular village vote took the same name in 1929.
