Local HistoryA land patent was issued to Frank Laffrenire by President U. S. Grant on May 10, 1875, and the town was called Leffrenire until 1898. Annie La Fernier became the first postmaster on March 26, 1898, with office named La Fernier, but she had it changed on June 1, 1901, to that of the bay by which the village was located. She was succeeded in office in 1902 by Thomas D. Tracy, clerk of the Mass Consolidated Mining Company, whose stamp mill was the chief business of the village. A station on the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad. keweenaw (Kewawenon) was the Indian word for portage. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
