Local HistoryIn 1872, Albert A., Abbott came hear from Decateur, Michigan. He bought 1000 acres and built a sawmill, he platted the village and on May 12, 1873, became its first postmaster. A station on the Chicago & Western Michigan (now Pere Marquette) Railroad. Incorporated as a village in 1887. Kalkaska is a Chippewa word of uncertain meaning.
