Heritage through our Ancestors Local HistoryJames J. Bush came here from Howell in 1850. John Jeffrey from New York State, located land here in 1853 and came to live on it permanently in 1855. From its location in the county, it was given a post office named Gratiot Center on November 16, 1855. First platted for Mr. Jeffrey by Sidney S. Hastings in 1856. On April 13, 1857, it was renamed after Ithaca, N.Y. Incorporated as a village in 1869 and as a city in 1961. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
