Local HistoryFirst settled in 1885 as the commercial center of the Gogebic iron mining district and platted that year by the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western (now the Chicago & Northwestern) Railway. Named for a man prominent in early mining deals, James R. Wood, known as "Iron" Wood. It was in Ontonagon County until Gogebic was organized in 1887.
