Ironton

Located in Charlevoix County

Local History

Robert Cherry, of the Pine Lake Iron Company, of Chicago, began a plant, on Pine Lake (now Lake Charlevoix), which, from 1881, converted into pig iron the ore brought in barges from the Upper Peninsula.  The village was platted in 1884.  The operation failed in 1893, but the village remained.
