Local History

When established in 1831, the county was named after the ancient Greek province.  In 1833, a party of sixty-three, from Herkimer County, NY, led by Samuel Dexter (1797-1856), who had prospected the site of the fall before, settled here.

Erastus Yeomans became the first postmaster of Ionia, the first post office in the county, on August 29, 1835.  Mr. Dexter had the first plat of the village made and recorded in 1841.  Incorporated as a village in 1865 and as a city in 1873.
