ChurchesLocal HistoryThe lake, which is entirely within Alcona County, was named for Bela Hubbard, a pioneer state surveyor. The village is a mile and a half north of the lake. An early settler here, John Ellsworth, began farming in 1878, as as the village formed, he became its first postmaster on June 21, 1883.
