Local HistoryIn his survey of 1849, William A. Burt called it Muskegon Lake, and in 1908, John Brink called it Red Lake. But since about 1852, it has carried the name of pioneer state geologist Douglass Houghton. The settlement here began as the center of the lumber operations of S. C. Hall in 1873. Since the decline of the lumbering operations, it has become a resort community. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
