Local HistoryRansom Sheldon bought land here around Portage Lake and in 1852 opened a store on the south side. William W. Henderson became the first postmaster on May 22, 1852. First platted by Ernest F. Pletschke in 1854. Incorporated as a village in 1867. Named after the county which had been named for pioneer state geologist Douglass Houghton.
