Local HistoryJeremiah Arnold, from DePeyster, N.Y., was the first settler in 1834. The first store and inn were built in 1838. Incorporated as a village in 1847 and as a city in 1869. In the early days it was also called Hillsdale Center from its location in the county, which had been named from all the hills and dales.
