Local HistoryIn 1835, Charles Butler entered the entire section of the present village. It was first called Rabbit River, from its location on the Rabbit River. Aaron Willyards platted the village in 1862. The next Rabbit River post office was opened on July 9, 1864, with J. W. Purdy as its postmaster, and he kept the office at nearby Purdy Lake. When David Burch became the postmaster about 1865, he moved the office into the village. Charles A. Field became the postmaster on May 19, 1870 and the name was changed to Hamilton.
