Local History
Here trader McKenzie located in 1820 and McCoy's unsuccessful
Baptist Indian Mission in 1823. Trader Louis Campau opened a post office
here in 1826 and in 1831, he bought the city's present business district for
$90.
Leonard Slater became the first postmaster of Grand Rapids
on December 22, 1832. Lucius Lyon bought some of Campau's land in 1835 and
on September 1, 1836, got the post office renamed Kent, after a New York State
chancellor.
The village was named Grand Rapids (from its location on
the Grand River, near the rapids), but its post office remained Kent until
February 6, 1844, when Campau got it changed back to Grand Rapids.
Incorporated as a village in 1838 and as a city in 1850.
